American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us
by Jesse Ventura

5/5 stars Bring wrestling to politics, never trusting, occassionaly right, mostly unfounded., April 5, 2010

This review is from: American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us (Hardcover)
With his limited means, Ventura relies on his instincts in deciphering the corrupt marriage of money and people. The government is made of people. People lie to stay in power to make money. Venture was the most beloved personality in the world wrestling and managed to keep his independent mind for the long hold. His only problem is his lack of structured education in many issues he is questioning. Many, if not all, the questions posed in the book are fundamental and serious when attempting to discern the truth about the issues he is presenting.

The book contains thirteen chapters, discussing thirteen conspiracies, on the span of eighty years of the contemporary American history. The most striking conspiracy of 9/11 exposes the weakness and strength of Ventura in dealing with complex world around him. Ventura raises many serious questions as follows.

1. How did the hijackers chose the date of 9/11 when most of the American Air Force Defense was engaged in a scheduled war game monitoring the soviet maneuvers near Alaska?
2. How the American Air Defense failed to disable four planes that deviated off their assigned routes against the standard procedure of the those days?
3. Why no single black box was found, for the first time in history?
4. Why the Pentagon site was devoid of any debris of the indestructible parts of the airplane?
5. Why the Pennsylvania crash site have very few debris that do not fit a crashed airplane?

In attempting to answer those questions, the author adopted the detective style of questioning every minute detail. He then relied in his deep seated mistrust of the government, which he learned from his father and his own experience. The Pentagon was hit by a missile or a demolition explosive in order to conceal the $2.3 trillion unaccounted military transactions. His reasoning is the total lack of any evidence of any airplane parts and the impossibility to descend 7000 feet at 440 mile/hour by the airplane used at the angle it struck. To the author's credit, the latter fact was also questioned by George Bush himself in praising the high skill of the hijacker who possessed such precision in striking a land target.

However, in analyzing the Twin Towers' attack, Ventura made gross errors that severely discredit his conspiracy theory. Ventura could not grasp the mechanics of a gigantic structure being destabilized by high impact. On the Fourth of July, 2001, I was on the 107th floor of the World Trade Tower. Kids who were running, from one window to another to watch the fireworks, were yelled at by the security folks for making the building unsafe. Just the mere running of people on the 107th floor was violent enough to make the entire structure shake, inconveniently. Ventura could not grasp that simple law of inertia. He claims that the collapse of the tower lasted 9.5 seconds while a free-falling object from the top of the towers would take 10 seconds to reach the ground. Here, you clearly realize the limited knowledge of the author. The author's self-proclaimed expertise on highly technical fields undermined his otherwise sound suspicion of the people who corrupt the government. Ironically, Ventura trusts the janitors of the World Trade Center to tell the truth more than the official sources. Many sources cited in the book were also entrusted by the author without the least effort to question their authenticity.

Ventura similarly claims that Tower # 7 was equally destroyed by demolition like the other Twin Towers and that the airplane gasoline would never melt steel. He thus dismisses completely the enormous earth shaking created by the collapsing towers that impacted the neighboring towers. Ventura spices his fragile conspiracy theory by claiming that a fact witness, who had keys for some rooms in the towers, was not allowed to talk about the explosions that occurred before the impact or in places far away from the impact. It gets worse when the author could not grasp the fact that the three-month long burning of the debris of the Twin Towers could easily be understood from the enormous source of energy trapped in enclosures under the debris. More ridiculous, is the author's suggestion that the state of New York, and not the Federal Government, should have conducted the forensic investigation instead of the hastily cleaning of the place. Ventura sees that one-year long cleaning effort of Manhattan as a conspiracy to conceal the truth of the planned demolition of the Twin Towers. In his views, the state should sifted through the rubbles methodically in order to account for every piece of evidence.

Of course, one could not dismiss all conspiracies presented in the book. Most probably than not, the Government is bent on deception, self-serving, and corruption. In Ventura's own observation, the CIA implants its eyes and ears in every business in America. He describes those CIA's agents as the ordinary folks next door who perform legitimate functions but who were assigned by the CIA to spy on others. What the author failed to prove, is whether that intrusive CIA's practice is protective of democracy or destructive to the Constitutional values of society.

Thanks. Thoughtful review and thoughts. I've always thought it would be impossible to set up such massive events as happened on 9/11 secretly, and have no hard evidence of conspiracy leak. And, supposing leakeage, imagine the direct and indirect punishment for the perpetrators and their family and name. Surely the US government is not that daft or evil to risk the chair or gas chamber for such direct massive premeditated murder on their own citizens.

Remember that Jesse Ventura served as a Governor for 4 years and grew up during the Vietnam era. Thus, his opinion could not easily be dismissed. Any government is capable of going to the extreme of the Nazi if public scrutiny and vigilance are curtailed. Yugoslavia, Iraq, and North Korea are such examples. Ventura asks very legitimate questions and struggles with rendering concrete answers.

Yes I agree, we should stay vigilant and critical. In the case of 9/11, I do not see a grand conspiracy as logical or feasable. But, Mr. Ventura's insight and experience weigh heavily. If he was close to government and still asks these questions, he must have compelling reasons.

Thinking about it, I mean that as in the cases you mention, those were I think genuinely ideologically driven. However open to debate or downright deplorable. In that light, for the government to stage 9/11 would be a cover up crime or meaning to distort outright. The enormity of the alleged operation and consequent risks of any leak would make that a highly improbable act. Imagine the number of people that would be in the know. Would there be so many evil souls in the government and perifery?

What is causing the whole upset on 9/11 is the issue of WMD and the invasion of Iraq. If you remember clearly George Bush in Germany in 2002 telling the German that he had no plan on his desk to start a war. That and the loss of 5000 lives and 40000 serious injuries due to the Iraq war created such extreme suspicion in the government. Ventura documents the training of the 19 hijackers and Ben Laden himself by American agencies among a plot to fight the Soviet in Chechnya and the other Islamic providences of Russia. He uses Reagan's secretive deal with the Iranians in 1978 to prevent the release of the American hostages until Carter is out. Then 23 hours after Reagan was sworn in, on January 20, 1979, the American hostages were released. The Iranians received weapons purchased by the drug money of the Columbian drug dealers. Those got the support of Reagan as well. Reagan was closer to get impeached and sent to prison. Ventura goes on in 13 conspiracies to show that the government is made of people and people lie and their lies have no ceiling. They could do anything and every thing that fulfill their greed.

If anything could be said about Ventura, is that he is blessed to belong to a nation that tolerate free speech and America is blessed to have him and others for speaking their minds. America is so powerful to be defeated and its strength lies in many assets beside it materialistic wealth.

Yes, I agree on what is causing the suspicion.

But do you mean Ventura proves black and white that Atta and the others were trained by the CIA et al specifically to fly into the WTCs and Pentagon?
That would be a smoking gun indeed. But I have not read of such hard evidence anywhere.

About the wheeling and dealing with Iran, Bin Laden, drugs money, taking the fall for the President etc, yes, I agree, but that was in the end to fight an ideological fight to put the pressure on communism, and the end justified the means in the eyes of the planners. Dirty, yes certainly. But maybe the adversaries were even dirtier? Opportunism and street fighting is inevitable in such struggles. Personal greed would be something else? I do agree that Big Powers tolerate injustice and suffering in principle such as stated in the alinea above.

Ventura lacks the means of answering the questions he raises. He questions almost everything no matter how compelling it was. His suspicion is healthy and valid. His goal is to get the honest people to tell the truth. He questions Atta’s story on many aspects but many of his interpretations are easy to dismiss. His weakest effect is his attempt to make himself an expert on many complicated fields such as evidence gathering, verification, technical matters, and the like. His strongest effect is his realization that most government officials are the worst of people and should not be trusted to tell the truth. Ventura simply resents to be a follower and that is his right.

Yes, I agree; it is healthy and good to be critical and inquisitive. For me, being suspicious to the extent discussed here is a big leap further. But Ventura, and indeed you, have the hands on experience with government officials that obviously fuels that notion. And, without such people as you and he, many dark doings would have gone unnoticed and many good things would not have occured.

But without too many expert technicians backing that up, as you mention, must we not be careful to let that feeling colour too much our perception to lead to a unproved accusation of this gravity? Many half truths do not make a whole truth.

Yes, that is so.

My main criticism on Ventura is that despite his accumulated wealth, he never attempted to return to school to polish his academic skills. He drives the most expensive cars and relishes in material gratification, yet appoints himself an expert on highly complicated matters. I knew quiet few people who went to school over the age of sixty and were able to catch up on lagging areas of their knowledge. One fellow, Dr Magiano, entered the medical school at age of 54 after his wife died and three of his kids graduated. One became a professor in a university, the other a well to do attorney, and the third a physician. Dr. Magiano worked in his father’s butcher shop in the 34th street in Manhatten for 30 some years. After he made all the money he needed, the medical school was his remaining dream. The American school rejected him at the age of 54. He insisted to go to the Dominican Republic that accepted his American High school diploma and at a cost of less than $5000 per year. Dr. Magiano returned to the US with a doctorate in medicine at the age of 63 and finished his internship at the age of 65. I met him in the Forte Lee Bally’s Total Fitness in 1996. He was then a famous gynecologist in New York. At the age of 73, he fell in ditch that tore his Achilles tendon. Few months later, he went to 7/11 convenient store to buy milk at 5 am. The police found him dead at the wheels of his car in the parking lot in front of 7/11. Many people in Forte Lee knew his story very well. His Italian father gave up on him when he was teen and decided to put him in his butcher shop. He was proud of his accomplishment and making his belated father happy in his grave.
