Lateral bend is beneficial to both lateral abdominal muscles, lateral vertebral spinal muscles, and shoulder muscles.

Lateral movements is always forgotten in daily activity and in most if not all exercise training.  Stretching the lateral muscles and ligaments ensures balanced muscular dynamics and prevents many injuries.

The shoulders are also worked out beautifully and when the number of repetitions exceeds a 100, sweating and flushing of the upper body ensues.  Here, the head and the momentum of  the bouncing arms are used to increase the resistance and the level of difficulty of bending.
